I always have folded wrong sides together knowing full well that it was technically incorrect. I believe like you that it has to do with transferring markings. Which i have never been good at anyways!

I fold wrong sides together so I can see the pattern placement on the right side before cutting. If it's technically wrong, well, too bad! I am having a chuckle at your graphic because I am currently making pajama bottoms (pattern piece shaped like yours) in that same tiger print (but a different colour)!
